Story
Alex Mercer was once a scientist for the prominent medical research corporation, Gentek, but one day he wakes up to find himself a shape-shifter with absolute mastery over his genetic structure, but no memory of how this came to be. Taking to the streets of New York City in search of answers, he quickly encounters a web of lies and vows to rip the truth from those who have hidden it from him and the world.

A few other things that Alex also learns quickly is that he is not alone in possessing amazing abilities, that there is a secret war brewing in New York City and he is on its front lines. A deadly infection has spilled out of control and the government has seized the media to stop the spread of information and has placed New York under quarantine as martial law is instated; igniting a firestorm of combat, carnage and death. As he roams the city, he faces an ever growing army of infected creatures warped and changed by the virus. As it spreads, the virus overwrites the genetics of those it infects, warping and changing their form into something else, something that seems to have been planned. The answers he seeks appear to be tied to the virus, so he rushes to discover the truth behind it, but standing against him and his goal is Project Blackwatch. An elite army specialist force, they are tasked with halting the spread of the virus at any cost and are eager to bring Alex in dead or alive to determine his connection to it. It would seem that they are potentially both enemy and ally to Alex's cause. Will Alex assist Blackwatch in its hunt, or join forces with the virus and subjugate humanity, pushing his powers to the limit as the genetic shackles of humanity fall by the wayside? That choice is up to the player in Prototype.

Gameplay
In Prototype players engage in 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay. This allows gamers the choice to either blend in with the population and covertly progress through the story, or fully unleash Alex’s powers, and move through New York City like a walking slaughterhouse, taking control of military vehicles, and causing destruction at every turn.

Although Alex is literally strong enough to fling people and large objects around easily, his most intriguing power is his ability to 'consume' people. In doing this he acquires their memories, abilities, and their appearance. New memories help him to solve the mystery of how he got the way he is, while new appearances allow him to shape-shift into new useful forms at will and abilities allow him to maneuver in parts of the game requiring specific skills in specific situations. In addition, Alex's consumption of people also facilitates his ability to transform his physical body and manipulate his senses. Most weapons acquired in this way are outgrowths from his appendages like exaggerated blades, shields, whips and claws used for brutal close combat, but consumption also allows for powerful abilities like thermal vision, which provides for vision through smoke and obstacles, as well as 'infected vision' with which Alex can detect hotspots of viral infection throughout the city.

Key Features:

  • Fast and Deadly Combat - Shape-shift your body to the situation at hand ... from claws to blades to hammers to whips, as you choose the right weapon for the situation. Change to shield or armor for defense or use advanced sensory powers (thermal vision, infected vision) to track your enemies.
  • Over-the-top Locomotion - Seamlessly and fluidly bound from building to building, run up walls, bounce off cars and everything in your path. Adaptive parkour lets you move freely through the open-world environments of New York City.
  • Unique Disguising Abilities - Consume anyone at anytime, take on their appearance and assume their memories and special abilities.
  • Deep Conspiracy Driven Storyline - Wake up with no memory of the past ... just mysterious powers and a link to a town in Idaho. Delve into the mysteries of your origin, the true nature of your power and your part in a conspiracy 40 years in the making.
  • Parkour Inspired In-game Movement - Alex Mercer's movements are inpired by Parkour, a mostly urban activity bordering on both art and martial arts that aims at moving the human body from one point to another as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible. Recent examples of it gained worldwide attention in chase scenes in the 2007 film "Casino Royale."
  • PlayStation Trophies - Add to your collection of PlayStation trophies as you play.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, still not Awesome   March 9, 2010
Oscar Calderon Retana
It's a fun game, not bad. I like it but it's on an area on where Excellent games come all the time. Still it's a pretty decent game I would recommend it

3 out of 5 stars Fun for a while, but it's no inFamous   March 3, 2010
Leonard Parker
Prototype is fun for a little while, before it gets absurdly repetitive and boring.

Should you get Prototype or inFamous? After having played both games to the end, the question of which is better is a no-brainer.

Both are a lot of fun and I would recommend either, but Prototype is irritatingly simple. It's kind of like playing Tekken back in the day - button mashing and a few combos that you can remember (which are often no use in a boss fight).

There's almost no strategy in Prototype. You just go at hyper speed and destroy everything. It goes from being absurdly easy (as your vastly overpowered character takes massive damage without dying while unleashing huge attacks and killing everything)to moderately interesting when the difficulty suddenly spikes.

Infamous has much, much more polished character control - you can actually get Cole to do what you want. Getting him to grab the desired spot or hit the appropriate level is annoying at first (you've probably read comments about the grabby hands)but with a little practice he was easier to control than any game I've ever played (including Assassin's Creed II, another excellent game). The controls for inFamous are precise and intuitive.

The controls for Prototype, by comparison, are clumsy and imprecise. Want to go to an exact spot? Good luck. Want to stop halfway up a building and look around? Nope. Want to run at full speed and blow everything up? This is the game. And with Prototype you just point the stick and he runs through, up and over everything without any other user input. That's a fatal flaw.

Prototype has a LOT more attacks but you'll only end up using a few. Why jack a tank when you can do much more damage more quickly by yourself?

Also, the targeting system in Prototype is horrible. HORRIBLE. Hold the button and it locks on to a target for you. Tap left or right and it locks onto the next target. You don't have to aim anything, making it absolutely pointless. Want to take out a helicopter? One button to crab a car, rooftop unit, tree, whatever. One button to lock on. One button to throw the object with perfect accuracy. No need to aim. Pointless.

There's no reason to do side quests in Prototype other than XP. The story itself is an extended adolescent revenge fantasy.

Prorotype also gets much more monotonous. It's fun taking out a city block full of people but the fun wears off. After a few hours it doesn't matter whether you do it with this or that too-powerful move, either. Infamous has some side quests that should have been left out, but for the most part it all works. The karma meter in inFamous is interesting but only half realized - hopefully the sequel does it better.

As for graphics, I agree that Infamous is too murky. The few times when it's clear, it's beautiful. The game would have benefitted from a lot more clear days. And the architecture is incredibly detailed, especially for a sandbox game (if the sequel can just make it easier to drop down without grabbing onto everything, it will have the perfect control setup). Prototype, on the other hand, looks like it could have been a PS2 title. The buildings are simple boxes and the textures are completely vanilla. If you've played the horrible Spiderman games you've seen it all before.

Main character animations are excellent for both games.

Prototype is good for big, dumb fun (which I'm a fan of). It's a lot of action, speed and carnage. If you're a 15 year old boy, you'll probably prefer it. If you're anyone else, Infamous is a better bet.

3 out of 5 stars A good game, if horribly repetitive   February 28, 2010
Inspector Gadget (On the trail of Doctor Claw)
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I'd been after Prototype for a while and was thinking it would always be out of my budget. By chance I managed to pick up a copy for less than half price and wasted now time in starting.

You play Alex Mercer a mutant-type creature who used to be human. Alex can consume anyone he encounters and assume their identity. A deadly zombie plague is spreading though Manhattan and Alex must figure out the whos and whys. Sounds simple, but you've got the entire military on your tail and monsters are growing in numbers.

Alex's powers are a some of cross between Spidermans' (the ability to run up buildings), Superman's (flying), various X-Men (mutating abilities) and the Hulk (super strength). He's a good character involved in a good mystery but blandness sets in about halfway through. The Manhattan Island location may be nearly geographically accurate but it's dull, dull, dull. The colour schemes are dull, the streets are dull and the view from the air is dull. I am also getting sick of these zombie/monster games featuring evil biotech companies in league with the military. It's getting really old now.

But the biggest problem though with Prototype is that the controls are just not precise enough. The game claims that it will target the main enemy when you push the targeting button. But in reality it'll just target anything and you'll waste precious time trying to aim at what you really want to kill. The same goes for objects you want to pick up. Alex can often grab things from an impossible distance yet cannot grab things that are right at his feet. This makes intense boss battles a real pain in Prototype. I'm not sure to what the title refers either but maybe I never watched enough of the Web of Intrigue cutscenes.

Worth playing once, but there's nothing worth coming back to.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing...   February 27, 2010
Nolan hendrick (Seatle Washington)
Prototype is terrible. It's just one long battle with endless waves of enemies. The game's extremely repetitive, the story sucks, and it's got bad graphics. You'll find when you first start playing this game that it's really to glide around New York City and destroy everything in your path. But if you ever try to start a mission the army will never stop chasing you.
BORING!
Don't waste your money on this crap game. Get infamous.

3 out of 5 stars A surprisingly disappointing game   February 25, 2010
John Smith (USA)
The Negatives:
I found this game to be extremely repetitive to the point where the game just got so boring I wanted to turn it off. Another problem with the game is saving, all to often when you save the game quit it and resume it the game seems to lose data in the sense that you sometimes have to repeat entire missions. Yet another problem is the combat. There are 2 main enemy groups in the game and those are the military and the infected. What sometimes happens is you get locked in combat fighting both forces at the same time and it can sometimes take hours (literally) to get out of the situation constantly bordering death and forced to run back and forth accomplishing nothing. Also, another problem is the skill upgrades in order to get higher up you really just have to waste a lot of time in the free roam mode to gain experience so actual story line game play is minimal in comparison. The story line is also very minimal and choppy at best in the sense that the game only reveals bits and pieces at a time.

The Positives: The graphics are awesome so much so that when you jump off buildings you sometimes get that life like sensation as if you are actually falling in real life.
